Backpacks of Love has been an absolute blessing for Pocahontas Elementary School and the students it serves. As an educator, invested in the well-being of our students, I have witnessed firsthand the impact this program has had on our community–not just at Pocahontas.
For many of our students, weekends were once a time of uncertainty and hunger. And even during the COVID-19 shutdowns across the country, this time was magnified. Despite the country coming back to normalcy, we have parents who are working multiple jobs along with a large population of families who have grandparents as the sole caregivers and breadwinners. Since the fruition of Backpacks of Love over the last 14+ years, weekends now signify something entirely different – hope, nourishment, and stability. The simple act of receiving a bag filled with nutritious food items has transformed the lives of so many children in Powhatan.
Not only does this program alleviate hunger, but it also fosters a sense of belonging and support within our school community. Students feel cared for and valued, knowing that there are individuals and organizations dedicated to ensuring their basic needs are met.
Moreover, Backpacks of Love has created a ripple effect of kindness and compassion throughout our school. Students who observe bags being delivered are curious on how to help, and eager for when they reach the appropriate age, how to pay it forward and volunteer their time to help peers in their community in need.
In essence, Backpacks of Love is more than just a program – it’s a lifeline for our students, a beacon of hope in times of uncertainty. I am immensely grateful for the positive impact it has had on Pocahontas Elementary School and the countless lives it has touched. Together, we are making a difference, one backpack at a time.
